ROOSEVELT ISLAND SEAWALL RAILING PROJECT

New York City’s Roosevelt Island seawall railings are getting a whole new look. Gundy Powder Coating and Elit Green Builders are replacing old, dilapidated railings with new anti-corrosive steel railings. The railings run along the majority of the Island’s 3.5 mile shoreline.

The newly manufactured railings undergo a two-step finishing process. First, a zinc-rich outgassing primer is applied to each railing section to minimize corrosion. Next, Gundy applies a high-performance powder coat specifically manufactured to withstand the outdoor elements. Finally, the powder coated railing is cured in a high-heat oven to insure maximum durability.

The $8.7 million project is just one of the several undertaken by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) as part of a robust five-year capital improvement plan.

AN ISLAND NEXT TO AN ISLAND

Roosevelt Island is a mixed income, racially diverse waterfront community situated in the East River of New York City between Manhattan and Queens and is jurisdictionally part of Manhattan. The Roosevelt Island Tramway, which connects Roosevelt Island to the rest of Manhattan, is the iconic symbol of Roosevelt Island to its residents.

MAINTENANCE MATTERS

Although there is very little available, or unaccounted for, space left on Roosevelt Island’s 147 acres to build new infrastructure, there is a big need to maintain the Island’s existing infrastructure and keep it updated for the next 50 years.

Roosevelt Island’s infrastructure maintenance is often costly, time-consuming, and considered a disruptive inconvenience to residents, business owners and even tourists and visitors who live, work and flock here in growing annual numbers. But the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) believes the long-term benefits of maintaining its infrastructure outweigh the short-term inconveniences. Gundy Powder Coating couldn’t agree more!

The Roosevelt Island Seawall Railing project is ongoing and expected to be completed in 2019.
